in fairness to the northeast - they're mostly smaller, white towns outside the major cities and the property taxes tend to stay local for schools, fire departments, parks, etc, many of which are the among the best in the nation
but as the other anon points out, a problem is that inflation & other forces drive up home valuations and thus property taxes with it
this also often means if you upgrade your house/land, your taxes go up - terrible incentive structure
maybe a reasonable tradeoff for raising a family in the area, but not so great for singles, retirees, or encouraging development
seems to me that property taxes should be low or zero for primary residency, especially if retired
land value tax is more acceptable, but only if it replaces other types of taxes
if local governments need money, a flatter residency tax specifically for local services makes more sense to me than tying it to the value of the property, but they've probably just found they can extract more money that way
