The reason for this was because the industrial revolution made a whole bunch of fields in science and academia completely obsolete and exposed as voodoo-tier bullshit, so the academic community had to find ways to milk more money off the government. Hence the sudden discovery of these marvellous ancient empires, giant reptiles and other nonsense.
