It's entirely fair that some people don't want to invest so much time into such an.. unexciting show.
Although to help you, the diaries exist. They give quite a lot of characterisation to Lain, whereas the show has almost none.

Most of it can be thought of as a prequel, with the very end being an alternate timeline. (you may know how the PS1 game ended)
And another hint from me personally, try to keep track of this: Lain has three distinct personalities in the concept art. I can't speak moonrunes, so I call them 'innocent', 'confident' and 'wired'. Each has distinctly different body language, expressions, mannerisms, preferred clothing and places they usually hang around at.
