For example, a typical 125 grain .357 Magnum load delivers 1100 ft lbs of muzzle energy from a 16 inch barrel. A typical 55 grain .223 is about the same from the same length barrel. A 240 grain .44 Magnum will deliver 1400 ft lbs of muzzle energy from an 18" barrel, which is roughly comparable to 7.62x39 Soviet from a similar length barrel. Of course the fatter pistol bullets will slow down faster, but inside 200 yards, they retain enough energy to be lethal and accurate.
