The problem nowadays is the rampant narcissism thanks to social media and the high amount of social ineptitude thanks to videogames. It's also worth mentioning that the dating market is complete different among our continents. I know very well that things are grim in North america. And the reason is because the majority of women over there are rubbish. Women are the most important factor to measure the success of a society. A society with high quality women will motivate men to improve and be the best versions of themselves. On the other hand, a society with shitty women will just create shitty men.
What I'm trying to say is that this hookup culture comes from the low quality men and women in your societies. It also happens here but I'd say is not as extreme as it is there. The best you can do is get a good life companion. Stay away from all the people that suffer from mental illnesses, you shouldn't spend your life being an amateur therapist.
