Remember that the passions and emotions are not the truth. God gives us passion and emotion as a consolation, but ultimately religion and faith are intellectual choices. As we advance in the spiritual life, God begins taking away our emotional and passionate consolations, so that we learn to pray and worship without the reward.
demons can manipulate emotions, so never rely on emotion. never pray for emotional consolation. St. John of the Cross calls it "The Dark Night of the Soul" and it is absolutely necessary for spiritual enlightenment. Think about it like a baby growing up. At first the parents carry it everywhere, and caress it, and answer every cry. but as the baby grows up, they start making it walk, they start teaching it to wait before they take care of it's problems, and they start making it do things it doesn't like. the baby doesn't like it, but if they don't do those things, then the baby can never grow.
when the emotional fire goes out, that is when the spiritual fire blazes highest. the best time to pray is when you don't feel like praying.
