Enough people believed this to write books and compile them into a Bible which has persisted for millennia before the printing press was invented. This leads me to conclude that the only likely explanations for the story are:
1) It really happened, and Jesus was who he said.
2) It was a lie propelled by secret societies.
And I don't believe the second one. The core messages in many religions sourcing back to the vedic texts are all similar.
