It depends on the church you're going to. I can only speak for catholic churches. We are usually lightly formal. A shirt with a collar, and pants is all most men are expected to wear. They expect no sandals or shorts or stupid tshirt designs. But there is no strict dress code. Many wear shorts every week.
Some other denominations are more formal, or completely casual.
