Going to university and having creative ideas are virtually mutually exclusive. Anyone with ideas that deviate from the norm (changing the Standard Model certainly counts) are ridiculed and are shunned by the academic community.
Average people cannot afford these high-priced degrees even if they're more than capable of doing the work. Average people do not have lab equipment in their basement, especially not the multi-billion dollar variety needed for conducting the most sophisticated experiments.
The entire system is rigged so that only the very wealthy can ever have the opportunity to capitalize on their ideas -- the very people who need the financial help the least.
