One major thing people always overlook but it's important. GET IN SHAPE. Do it now while you can. Get on a low carb, high protein diet. Start out by doing cardio (jogging, cycling or anything that helps), lose the weight, strengthen your heart... do it for at least two weeks and then go to a gym and start lifting. You don't have to strive to look like an action film star, just do it so you can at least throw your own weight around because it will come in handy if something did happen.
Plus it's just healthy and will make you look more appealing.
