The silent generation and earlier had based men and women. The women stayed home and tended to the family but it wasn't a status thing like it has been ever since boomers came of age. They actually worked hard in the home as they did not have the modern conveniences we have today and they appreciated what they had, even if it was a family of five or more in a two-bedroom home.
