I live in north Wisconsin and built my own home with passive solar and ventilation. During the winter I supplement the heat with a wood burning stove, but only have to use it if the sun doesnt show for several days in a row. Each winter I use roughly a half cord of wood, while my neighbor (in a traditional stick frame suburban style house) uses 9 cords. Pic related, I use it to grow citrus at my latitude
