The more you try NOT to be sad, the more you're thinking about what being sad feels like, and the more close to sadness you become. You end up more familiar with feeling sad than not. Your synapses are now all trained to trying not to be sad.
What should one do? Stop trying not to be sad, but don't pay attention to your sadness as well. Meditation is really important, and at this point relaxation is more important than happiness. You need to be still, serene, first, then you can be happy, genuinely happy.
