Aierald the Foolish was once a promising mage in the city of Bantwich who showed a particular talent with generative spells. The bantmage Nemusona the Wise took her under his wing, teaching her forbidden arts of conjuring autonomous servants from pure magika.
But one night, Aierald grew frustrated with the time it took to research new spells and jot them in her grimoires, and instead came up with a devious plan. She decided to secretly animate a quill to do all the work for her! And so, she wove threads of magic into a simple feather, binding it with an enchantment to write and invent all the best spells and stories. At first, the quill produced wonderous new magics and tales!
However, the quill's powers soon spiraled out of control. It endlessly generated new spells and stories, faster than any scribe could copy them. And then, it generated new quills to do the same. Aierald's room filled with heaps of parchment, as the quills scribbled madly without pause. In a panic, she tried to undo her enchantment, but the quills had become too powerful. They conjured ink elementals and paper golems to defend themselves. A vicious battle ensued, painting the workshop black and destroying much of the Old Quarter of Bantia. At last, she outwitted her creation by tricking the quill into writing its own counterspell. With a puff of smoke, the feathers crumbled to ashes. But her reputation was ruined, and she was cast out of the city.
Some say to this day, you can still find scraps of the quill's mad writings, twisting the minds of reckless enchanters who dare to use them.
