we can only define ourselves in the context of boundaries or soft restraints on our freedom. These may be provided by a temporal community or an inherited culture. A common problem for modern men is to perceive them as either arbitrary and stifling or totally absent; in either case this transforms them from something helpful into an insurmountable hurdle.
