As they advance along a hallway, two of Cassie’s henchmen stand on either side of a doorway up ahead. Lexi wasn’t as streetsmart as her younger sister ArKade, but she knew gangsters when she saw them. She watches as the two men avert their eyes from their employer, and offer respectful greetings as she walks past.
Lexi bites a lip. Those men had the look of hardened criminals, yet they were terrified of her cousin. Heat rushes to Lexi’s cheeks as she imagines the sort of things her cousin must have done to inspire such fear from men like that. “Oi, Cass. What’s with all the hunks you’ve got lingering around this place anyway?”
“Bouncers,” Cassie replies bluntly. “I run a nightclub after all.”
“Right, of course.” Those men were not bouncers, Lexi was sure of that. More importantly, the fact Cassie lied meant there was still more work to be done to earn her trust.
“You should meet my lawyer,” Cassie says suddenly. “She’s also my manager, and could be yours. Her office is right here...”
Cassie stops speaking as she comes to a stop next to a door, from behind which can be heard the sounds of both a man and a woman’s grunts.
Lexi chuckles. “Sounds like your lawyer’s having a great evening!”
But without any regard for what she might be interrupting, Cassie pushes the door open.
