The people doing this don't care about your 'bag' the whole point is to make sure that when the hedgies have to buy those shares back they won't be able to. This isn't about winning against the entire market, it's about punishing one of their number by accepting a small loss knowing that their potential loss is UNLIMITED LOSS.
Note that the other hedge funds immediately started betting with them with loans and now everyone is standing back to see how well it burns.
Any other hedge funds caught up in this did not learn anything from the GFC and need a harsh lesson.
Never invest something you aren't prepared to lose.
