Many regular Australians would likely favor a return to coal-fired power generation because coal is abundant in Australia and makes for very cheap energy. It powers economies to the top due to its inexpensiveness, energy density, ease of use, ease of transport, ease of storage, and reliability in all weather conditions.
No other fuel can match coal, all around -- in all those qualities listed above. Nuclear comes close though. Gas plants have a terrible habit of not functioning too well in a winter deep freeze, but that's not likely to be a problem in Oz.
I wish you guys could enjoy the benefits of using your own wonderful coals, but until these wacko New World Order Greenies go away -- or are shoved out of the way -- it seems unlikely.
Still, you guys benefit from a strong mining industry, including coal mining, that helps your economy hugely.
