The very idea of it originally was more scary than knowing that there was a big spooky monster in it. It triggers a xenophobic response, as the fear of the unknown is paralyzing. Effectively, it is no different than being unable to see in the dark, as the concept is that it is an endless maze of halls and cubicles - but you'll never know what's around the next corner, or the next, or the next etc. etc.
