It's also the product of one of Japan's greatest mangaka at the peak of his ability. The mechanical designs are autistically detailed, every little nuance of scenery is mapped out, the girls have incredible 80s style hair... the characters are a lot more likable than those in his later work, too. Benevolent psychopaths in very high pressure situations, but with close relationships that make them feel like normal people.
