In 2006 the democrats won a bunch of senate and house seats. Then in 2008 they built on that.
In 2022 the republicans got a handful of house seats and retained those (romney-mcdaniel moved funding away from competitive races with pro-Trumpers in 2022, McConnell sank 4 senate races to weaken Trump).
"Trump" got as good as he was going to get in 2024, give or take a bit more if he and elon had spent more money in virginia and new hampshire. Flipped 4 (maybe 5) senate seats- actually pretty good. But within the historical context of McConnell sabotaging senate races in 2020 and 2022 and republicans being sabotaged in the house in 2022 they had difficulty really taking off.
