Winter tires also wear a lot faster above their temperature threshold. We’ve had some unseasonably warm winters here the last 3 years and there were several challenging drives when you had rain and mild temps in the 50-60 deg F range. You almost want to go back to the summer or all seasons set, but then as soon as the temp drops back down (it’s 17 deg F with fresh snow now) that you appreciate them.
Also, studs are mostly for ice. Winter tires don’t do jack shit on ice regardless of the construction. Chains are a giant pain in the ass to deal with too . Thankfully the city is good about pre-salting the roads to limit ice for,action, but sometimes they don’t get out there in time and you get black ice,
