What's the best version of the Bible to read for a complete beginner who has never read so much as a single passage of it?
I'm more interested in modern translations that try to make it more digestible to a modern reader, I know lots of people will say the King James version is the only version, but there have been many translations since that have been well reviewed by biblical scholars, so I'd like to try one of the newer ones.
I'm interested in the apocrypha as well. Correct me if I'm full of shit, but the Greeks and the Syrians and the Copts all include stuff in their bibles that's not in the King James version right? I'm curious if there are any modern translations that include as much of that stuff as possible.
I've been curious about attending Sunday church at one of the various churches in my town just for the experience, but I figure I should at least read the good book first.
I hear good things about the Jehovas Witness version of the bible, as well as a few other versions, but I figure someone on here must be vastly more knowledgeable about this stuff than I am, all I've done is read a few Wikipedia articles.
