>>2113932i acn actually answer this; on top of hirigana and katakana basically being the same as any other alphabet (there is even a famous poem that contains every character much like the ABC song to english westerners, or more like the phrase "The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog") kanji have been formally separated by grade school level and those are the ones your expected to know by grade 1 or grade 2 etc
theres also a larger set that are approved for use in textbooks and official documents (such as birth certificates but basically official use in general), but the number of real kanji is much larger
