there is. i should note that case was really extreme because usually games end way before it gets to that point and they had previously lost a big fight over a teamwide buff.
that being said many characters have abilities like temporary invulnerabilities or shields that block a spell they can use to deal with it. even the characters that don't can buy items that let them avoid the spell but they're not necessarily worth getting for a lot of characters
