desu I once read a Bulgarian fantasy novel. It took place in medieval times, in a world where Bulgaria was the dominant European power.
It followed some person who was sort of like an Inquisitor who was looking into some disappearances in some mountain fortress in the Rhodopes. When he came there, he found out that there was a local legend that there was a gateway to Hell underneath the mountain.
Long story short, it ended up being true and the main character ended up getting sucked into the gate. And Hell was the current real life history of Bulgaria.
