In the midday shadow of HALCYON's iconic White Tower a transformation has occurred, the streets of North Spaghettitown once choked with grime and detritus now glisten in the August sunshine, the vacant properties with their boarded up windows have been replaced by electronic boutiques, upmarket bars and restaurants, crime is reported to be at a record low for the area, and property values have skyrocketed leaving longterm residents ecstatic. A new monorail system extends northward connecting the central metropolitan area to the suburbs and the remote outskirts, this new mass transit system is reported to have been funded entirely by the HALCYON company and promises to cost the average citizen considerably less than running a vehicle. Big if true.
Some have referred to this as the "Cyberpunk District", a horribly uninspired name if I do say so myself - but as I walk the gentrified streets of North Spaghettitown after sundown I find myself missing having to clutch my handbag when walking past one of the many homeless shanties - the forgotten people I once feared are simply no longer there. One particularly intimidating encampment has been replaced by a store which sells affordable retinal implants for the elderly and visually impaired.
Who asked for this?
Is there any aspect of our lives that HALCYON has not invaded?
According to a recent study the average American is never less than ten feet away from a HALCYON product, if you own a cellphone or personal computer their chips lurk inside and yet we know next to nothing about this company or its founder Dia Shirley Burroughs who has continually refused to take the company public or open its doors to investors. Rumours swirl that HALCYON is little more than a cult of religious fanatics who worship Ms Burroughs as if she were some kind of deity. Is it true? You tell me.
