It's not particularly true to the bible, there is a lot of plot added in (that I think adds to the theatric experience) and as expected based on the director they make it look like Pilate was responsible for Christ's death.
At one point, Lucius (The Roman guard who would later found the Church of Antioch) goes to Barabbas's cell. Lucius knows the works of Christ and Barabbas knows that he must receive death for his part in the Insurrection. Lucius looks at Barabbas full of contempt and tells him
>The Man Jesus has taken your place on the cross. You have been pardoned of your crime, you are free to go.and Barabbas replies
>Why? What have I ever done for Jesus? Why would he die for me?It's a great analogy. Barabbas has been spared death by a complete stranger who was willing to die for him and for the first time in the movie he believes that Christ is the Messiah.
