the fact is that humans are tribal and social and will tend to do things that they notice others do, but can and will jump groups for these movements. So while your view of an individual may show them as chaotic and acting of free will, you'll zoom out to look at population behaviors and see big, whirling currents of similar behavior, like particles in a stream. Couple that with the fact that yeah, there are lots of really fucking stupid people in the FIRST world, not even counting third world insects, and yeah, it's going to be really easy to fall into the trap of thinking that most people are just brainless drones.
