He taught me that family is all that matters, & that love and companionship are the most important and beautiful parts of being human. He taught me that I should never settle for anyone that doesn't make me truly happy, and that I should discard anyone who tries to belittle me, intimidate me or abuse me. He taught me to pity the weak, the helpless, and to have compassion for the downtrodden. He taught me to never hurt anyone that did not deserve it. He taught me to speak softly, but carry a big stick. Most of all he taught me that no one will ever save me, I can only rely on myself.
Being raised by a violent, emotionally disturbed, pathetically weak, self obsessed diagnosed sociopath could have made me into a far worse person than I am. I hesitate to even use the word "taught" to describe his opening of my mind to these lessons. I taught myself more than anything, but it wasn't quite like that either.
It's hard to explain.
