The part 'caused the hamster to hide in furniture' I interpret to leave to other rooms or hide away from him. Eventually the boyfriend rages so hard that he concussed her extremely bad and she fell into a coma, thinking she was dead he left her for dead in the house and fled. Somehow she was rescued from this state after 2 days, and was shunted off to the hospital somehow and then moved back in with her father who had to nurse her back to health and correct all of her issues that cropped up over the relationship like the heavy weed usage and bulimia before she moved back in with her mother some 6 months before the show began.
The Tay you see in the beginning of the show is probably a result of the abuse, practically in tears at the thought of fucking someone over because she is so conflict averse, the Tay you see in the middle-end of the show that just dives in and attacks Frank or boxes TJ without hesitation is probably who she was prior to the abuse. It was really a slow rebuild of her confidence over the show, you'd see glimpses of it here and there like when she squared up to Jimmy when he was tard raging on her but would cry at the thought of people fucking with her panties and clothing, by the end she is practically untouchable to verbal and situational abuses.
TJ may not be a stuttering mess any longer but of the two I think Tay probably went through a more dramatic change that was unrecognized by Sam when he offered her that idiotic "leadership" arc.
