This is the same as the "animals have gay sex sometimes" thing. Animals, and human societies that had less social constructs, didn't have the concept of bashfulness the way we do. So it happened sometimes that people of the same sex would masturbate together, so to speak.
But that doesn't means they were mentally ill to the point of not being attracted to women. That stuff was masturbation to them. Be it animals or ancient greeks/romans, they still ended up breeding. They had children and took care of them.
