>The transition from pennies being twice the size of half cents to how tiny they are today would definitely have been weird, same with half dimes transitioning to nickels.I recently bought a reprint of a book that you'd probably find extremely interesting, "Fractional Money" by Neil Carothers originally published in 1930, being "A History of Small Coins and Fractional Paper Currency of the United States". It's the most detailed and insightful book of its kind I've ever come across, and it really gets into the weeds of the economic reasoning and legislative happenings behind our "Subsidiary coinage" and matters like the discontinuation of half cents, move to small cents, transition from half dimes to CuNi nickels, and a host of other changes and incidents I hadn't ever considered before. Considering your advanced interest in such subsidiary coinage I'm sure this book would be a treasure to you. Pic is of some of the the content summaries of chapters you will find quite enlightening. I got my used copy for $8 shipped, the best value I've gotten from a book in a long time, I can't recommend it highly enough man.
