It appears that whatever or whoever caused the melt damage, they did so in a way that leaves behind evidence of what they were doing. Everything could have been melted and destroyed without any reference to the past; instead we have so many numerous examples that demonstrate that this was not a natural occurrence, and there was intent behind it.
