I think what is more interesting is what seemed to have happened to anime within the last 40 years. Hokuto no Ken has almost no sexualized characters other than a transexual, who is shown as pure evil. Women and children are seen as innocents to be protected by men. In fact, the entire world is being shaped, for evil or for good, by the strength of stoic, disciplined and focused men. It's rare to see something like this in modern anime.
