There's an undoubtable connection between the (now verified) infant sacrifices the Romans observed in Carthage and the Moloch baby killing rituals the Bible mentions. And the elite nucleus of Carthaginian society was seemingly Caananite in origin. I think however that it's possible these people financially ruled over a much more varied mass of peoples (including Celtic or Proto-Celtics) and that alot of the more admirable elements of Phoenician society sprung from such people (the naval excellence for example). That's just a theory. A race theory.
