When the prophet Muhammad pbuh was spreading islam in Mecca and Almadina the people of quraysh and the jews knew that his religion was right thing to do but if people started following it it would affect the power structure and the leaders of the jews and quraysh would no longer have as great power over people if islam became the majority religion so from when the prophet started spreading the word many attempts of assassination were carried out by the jews and several wars between the Muslims and quraysh (who used to worship statues) and wars back then had traditions it would go like this
#1 The two armies would gather somewhere far from any houses or cities
#2 the war would be started by the clash of 3 soilders from each side
#3 once the small clash is over then the real war would commence
So it wasnt just Muslims going around slaughtering people as you would think and the oppositions of the prophet were desperate to end him and the prophet couldn't just stand there and accept his death like that
