The US was a land grab, so tons of people of similar backgrounds often with the same surname all went out and settled with no real way of knowing what anyone else was doing. Canada, while huge, doesn't even have a third as many cities and towns as the US has. As for Russia, I'm just guessing, but because it is part of the old world, I imagine it still has multiple of the same name, but not nearly as many as the US.
