How about something featuring a magical girl. OR, a boy who is the descendant of a long line of magical girls and forced to take up the role due to his parents not having had a daughter. He turns to his mother to teach him about being a magical boy, and they grow closer over time [his dad is also out of the picture conveniently]...
You'd find it pretty different from Eva which is as much tokusatsu as it is a mecha show. It's still influenced by Gundam but so is practically everything that came after Gundam. I'd be very impressed if you could handle that length of both 70's animation + toy commercial conventions though. It looks like this, ya know:
