For much of the series Rand is corrupted by the Dark One (Satan) and suffers mental illness as a result. It's only once he realizes his nature as Creator on the mountaintop that he becomes a savior figure. That passage is quite beautiful as he understands that his purpose is to right the wrongs of his previous incarnation. After that revelation, he is calm and composed in his ideals and desires. In my mind it's definitely metaphorical of the Jesus story, with most of the series being the Garden of Gethsemane moment and the final battle against the Dark One as the crucifixion/resurrection.
