It occured to me that people believe that people actually used to believe in sea monsters roaming the sea because they don't understand the grammar in the phrase “there be dragons here” not affirming the reality of the presence of dragons there. The semantic range of the grammar lay more somewhere along paraphrases like: “There may or may not be dragons here”, “There are appearently dragons here”, “Let's just say there are dragons here”.
