Soma is the name of the drug concoction they drink. I guess the milk probably already has something in it but perhaps not. They either make yogurt out of it or near yogurt, the bacteria in the mixture will convert lactose to lactic acid which will drive ibotenic acid (dangerous stimulant chemical) to convert to muscimol (hallucinogenic sedative). After Indra has 'drank' the Soma, the inititates also drink the Soma, becoming intoxicated.
