But a small minority of people do have actual souls, and so when they die, their souls harmonize to that higher, harmonic plane, though their physical bodies also disintegrate.
This is why the average person so fears death, because they correctly sense that this petty, shitty world is all they can ever have. And that's why so many of them end up as Bushes, Gateses, and Faucis, frantically devouring as much of this petty, shitty world as they can whilst they still exist, because they know in their guts that it's all they get.
It's really not even a choice -- you're either born the type with a soul or you're not, and there's nothing you can do beyond that.
