it's just that shady companies work people into the ground so if you're in poverty or don't have the proper japanese communication skills to figure this stuff out you end up stuck working 70 hour weeks or whatever, but provided you work somewhere reputable and reasonable that sort of thing won't happen.
as a matter of fact this is one of the many situations where being a foreigner can be an advantage since you have a sort of get out of jail free card for certain customs. in many cases people end up doing overtime just because it's "rude" to leave before the boss does, but if you just say that's not part of your culture and you respect the work ethic of your boss and peers before leaving anyway they think you're cool and exotic instead
