and you indeed can't always trust the director
eg, Hills Have Eyes (2006), where the director himself recommends the very inferior theatrical, because otherwise, it wouldn't have had an R rating, and less people would have watched the movie
yet the unrated one is leagues better (mostly scenes around the caravan rape and murders)
