Genesis 49:4 Commentary
>You have gushed over like water(s), (may) you not be allowed to be having excess;{α}>for you have mounted{β} [the] double bed{γ,δ} of your father;{ε,ζ}>then you have made [the] laid out beds{η}—of which he has mounted{θ}—to become defiled.{α} The birthright to the inheritance of double portion. Deut 21:16-17. 1 Chr 5:1. Alternatively, superiority or preeminence.
{β} Literally, “you have gone up to” but euphemistically in the sense of Gen 31:10—to mount—which conveys the same idea in English.
{γ} משכבי (משכב). Grammatically dual. A sleeping arrangement for two people, a double bed, or a pair of beds. Literally, a “place of lying”—euphemistically, a “place for having sex” (as in Gen 19:32, שכב • κοιμάω)—which emphasizes the act performed in bed. The plural is attested in Ps 149:5—משכבותם (their beds) • κοιτῶν αὐτῶν. Compare with Josh 2:19—דלתי (double doors or gates) • θύραν.
{δ} κοίτην (κοίτη). A marriage-bed.
{ε} “the double bed of your father”—i.e. the sexual domain of your father.
{ζ} Gen 35:22
{η} A bed or bedding which has been laid out, spread out, or otherwise prepared.
{θ} Gen 30:1-8
