>>16892927thats not really saying much, though. because to me the half life games arent really important, its the engines theyre on that are. theyre okay as games with all the cool thinking put into them, sure, but i think that if they were on anything other than engines valve made then they really wouldnt be remembered to be much of a big deal, people kinda ignore that and just say "wow half life is the most important game ever" whilst eh, not really, its source that was so important, half life was always just a tool for it
half life 2 to me comes as basically just a showcase of what the source engine can do, like a tech demo except its a full game. its a solid game but pretty much everything that makes it that good is what the source engine is. 90% of its memorability just comes off from that, and also ig how revolutionary it was for its time.
the people who say they find half life 2 stale nowadays despite recognizing it as good, its probably because weve just gotten very used to tech like source's being in games. it doesnt come off as insanely impressive anymore cause youve seen flashier stuff in newer releases, u go back and look at half life now ya its cool stuff but its not really innovative to your eyes
on the other hand people back in the day played through half life 2 thinking its the coolest shit cause thats how advanced source was for its time, they were seeing stuff not really done before and it was all tied to the half life name. thats why all the talk of it gets tied into half life rather than the source engine
maybe im not making any sense with my point but idk thats always what i thought.
this is the same reason ive been wanting to play through half life 2 though
to me its a very chill game cause its just a series of showcases of what the source engine is capable of lol
since im so used to source that its as familiar to me as fucking real life at this point, itd be like taking a walk
