Find something you want to learn, find the limits, and make a game out of pushing those limits.
As for video games themselves, shooters have been proven to effect spatial reasoning and most games involve puzzle solving of some kind. They can effect decision making as the military and airforce use games for this.
As for fictional RPGs, you can practice method-acting of characters you normally wouldn't play and unlike most novels, they involve multiple endings and story arcs THAT ARE LITERALLY EFFECTED BY INPUT FROM THE PLAYER.
