pretty sure it's so popular because it's a free to play game that has cross platform play for every console including mobile and it has enough randomness that casual players can have really crazy highlights sometimes despite being dogshit
fortunately i think those 2 things are pretty much the only resources that work in those sorts of ways as far as i remember. pretty much everything else should explicitly be on the ground in increasingly dangerous/difficult to access areas.
