I remember having them since early teens. Back then I didn't know where they came from and never bothered investigating. Occasionally I'd just feel a clump of solid material appear in the back of my mouth and I'd push it out with my tongue and smell it a bit, then chew it up and swallow it. It wasn't until I was an adult that I found out where they came from and that's when I began throwing them in the trash instead of chewing them up. A teaspoon works well for removing them, but I would recommend a pair of these steel picks, you can get them cheaply on ebay.
